Rooster of Barcelos Making Love

Of the various clay figures representative of the strongest artistic heritage in the Minhota region, there is one that undeniably assumes a prominent position - the legendary Galo de Barcelos. Legendary because, according to history, this icon is born from the popular legend that transports the Capital of Figurado and Pottery to medieval times, describing the epic of a pilgrim who was on his way to Santiago de Compostela, was saved from certain death thanks to the singing of a cock that was heard in a miraculous way. In 1935, in Geneva, the Galo de Barcelos made its first international appearance in the exhibition of Portuguese Popular Art. However, it is from the 50's and 60's that the garish Galo became a national symbol crossing borders beyond the sea. In this collection, we present a peculiar selection of the Rooster of Barcelos roaming with the signature of the artisans Irmãos Mystery.
