Popular Saints
The figurative Barcelense is prolific in its most diverse forms and colors of expression of themes of our daily life and of the local imaginary. However, it is the religious themes that have the greatest weight in local artisanal productions. From the middle of the twentieth century and by the hands of great artisans such as Rosa Côta, Rosa Ramalho and Mystery, among others, the Figurado de Barcelos assumes itself as one of the most relevant of all Portuguese Popular Art. Of all the representations of Santos Populares, that of Santo António is, without a doubt, the most desired of all the Figures of Portuguese Popular Saints. In this collection, we present a selection of the most beautiful pieces from Santo António, São Francisco de Assis and Rainha Santa, with the signature of the master craftsmen Conceição Sapateiro, Júlia Côta and Carlos Dias.
